France Awards Prize to Alternative Information Centre

Friday 9 November 2012

French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault will award the 2012 Human Rights Prize of the French Republic to the Alternative Information Center (AIC), a joint Palestinian-Israeli organization based in the West Bank and Jerusalem. The prize recognizes AIC work in exposing Israeli impunity in the occupied Palestinian territory and promoting accountability for Israeli military and settler violence. The prize will be awarded in a ceremony in Paris on 10 December 2012 to AIC co-founder Michael (Mikado) Warschawski.

Warschawski is a long-time Israeli human rights activist, analyst and author. His book On the Border has recently been translated into Hebrew.

“The AIC has never conducted its work in order to receive prizes,” said Warschawski. “Yet this prestigious institutional recognition of AIC work is certainly welcome to highlight the need for state accountability. It is in this critical period that France demonstrates an understanding of the need to end Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory in compliance with international law.”

The prize will be given to the AIC and four additional international organizations for their work in the field of human rights.
